ADVICE FROM DERMOT'S WIFE:
'TRY NOT TO GLAZE OVER'
A PLUS-ONE'S GUIDE TO THE RED CARPET
It's award season. Not entirely relevant to most of us, but looking at the dresses is pleasingly diverting. And if you're married to a celebrity, the trot down the red carpet is riddled with enough sweaty, panicky moments to leave you sobbing like Best Actress before the ceremony's even started. Dee Koppang totally gets the horror. This film producer and director has endured a decade of awkward hovering while husband Dermot O'Leary is hounded by fans and press. At her first big do, her shoe fell off and bounced down the stairs in front of the world's paparazzi. Whoopsie. She's cracked it now though, and she's here to impart her knowledge to the rest of us. Phew.
Have a dress rehearsal
I once got ready for a premiere in the ladies' loo at work and had 10 minutes to do my hair, make-up and chuck on a dress that I bought on my lunch break. The only problem? The dress had buttons up the front and they merrily came undone as I made my way up the red carpet. Hideous.
By all means, do a Liz Hurley
That safety pin dress worked for her. She stole the limelight. So if you're an aspiring actress or model, then go for it. But I work behind the camera, and if I pulled ANYTHING like that, the crews I work with would take the piss forever.
Avoid your own Anne Hathaway moment
When that swanky big car arrives to whisk you to the event, ask the driver what side of the car the red carpet will be on - they always know - then sit on the opposite side. Are you listening to me? This is crucial. That way you avoid those embarrassing up-skirt shots.
Try not to glaze over
I have a terrible tendency to zone out during the press interviews - as you're standing behind your partner often slightly out of earshot. Try to listen and follow the interview. I've been caught before not realising that the journalist was asking me a question…
Your fellow plus-ones are your allies
Befriend other plus-ones, there are so many amazing ones out there. I'm good friends with Lauren Laverne's husband Graeme - then there's Dawn Porter (other half of Chris O'Dowd), Julia Corden. Mrs Barlow and Mrs Donovan are both amazing too. They are certainly not plus-ones in real life.
Be prepared to play cameraman
For the fans. You need to master how to take LOTS of pictures on all different types of cameras and phones.
Borrow your husband's make-up artist
Build up your own 'glam squad' of people you know who will help you out. At any time. Anywhere. William Vintage lends me frocks, ditto Lulu Guinness for clutches and I go to The Lounge in Soho for hair. I also pinch Dermot's make-up artist Sarah - when she has time.
Remember, the tables may turn
Last year I went on tour with Justin Bieber making a documentary about him, then I worked on the Olympics opening ceremony, then a Victoria's Secret fashion show. My project this year is that I've set up a film production company with Dermot (called Bowery & Bond) and I'm developing my first feature with BBC Films. It's an 80s gay coming-of-age story. (Gypsy Boy, by Mikey Walsh). I'm sure Dermot would love to be my plus-one when that launches.

Dermot
O’Leary talks about X Factor 2013 and the fate of Tulisa, Gary Barlow & Nicole
Scherzinger
Dermot O’Leary has admitted that he has no idea who will be judging onThe X Factor this year and he doesn't expect to find out any time soon either. The hunky star has presented the ITV show since 2007 but insists that he only finds out the line-up about a week before the judges auditions start.
There have been reports that Simon Cowell will return, Tulisa will be sacked, Nicole Scherzinger replaced and Gary Barlow is set to walk but Dermie knows nothing about any of it and on Loose Women today said: “I have no idea. …..In terms of judges we never know. I didn't know who the judges were up until a week before last year. It’s all about diary and it goes to the last minute.”

He’s not too worried about who might come in either, though that wasn't always the case. He confessed that he was very concerned about the series two years ago, when Cheryl Cole and Simon left and explained:
“When Simon and Cheryl left, I thought ‘that’s it right?’ and for about a month it was just me and Louis [Walsh] and I thought ‘oh I’ve made a big mistake here.’
But, it just goes to show how robust that format is, because Gary has done such a great job, Nicole has come in and done a great job this year as well and Tulisa won last year.”

Dermot loves being on the singing competition and hosting the weekend specials and continued:
“I wouldn't do it if I didn't love it. It’s so much fun, it’s a nine month gig for me so if you couldn't totally immerse yourself in the brilliance and the insanity of it then you shouldn't be doing it.”
“You have got a real family feel there and for me, I love doing live telly and it gives me 20 shows to do a year.”

Dermy married his long-term girlfriend Dee Koppang in September of last year and will soon celebrate his first Valentines Day as a married man. He isn't planning anything too extravagant though and laughed:
“ I'm a 365 romantic. I'm at it every day.”
