YOU’RE ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR LAST SHOW

Stylist meets Dermot O'Leary

X Factor presenter Dermot O'Leary will be swapping tearful contestants for A-list stars this weekend, as he joins Caroline Flack presenting live from the Baftas red carpet. We chat to TV's favourite front-man about live broadcasting and the art of celebrity interviews...
Live From The Red Carpet: The 2013 EE BAFTAs, Sunday 10 February, from 5pm on E!

Who are you most looking forward to interviewing at the Baftas this weekend?

The little in boy in you just goes, ‘Daniel Day Lewis is going to be there!’ And even though there’s not a cat in hell’s chance he’s going to speak to us, he’s still going to be there.

Do you ever get star struck?

You sort of do and you don’t. Your brain goes, ‘I’m talking to Brad Pitt.’ But then before you know it you’re just chatting to them and having a laugh – we’re all cut from the same cloth at the end of the day.

How do you deal with difficult interviewees, when they clam up or refuse to speak to you properly?

It’s just down to repetition, repetition, repetition. You hope you’ll pull someone out of their shy stupor. You don’t really have a tactic, you just busk it on the day. But it’s happened to me loads of times.

Has any celebrity really surprised you – you were expecting them to be rude and they were lovely, or vice versa?

It’s more those mixed up moments where you’re having a chat with your George Clooneys or your Brad Pitts and you think, ‘Hey, we’re having a really good time, we’re having a laugh.’ And then you walk away and think, ‘Blimey, that was a bit surreal, wasn’t it?’

What’s the most stressful part of live broadcasting?

The only time it's stressful is when you have to fill and you have no idea how long you’ve got to fill for. But you’ve always got experts to speak to – at the Baftas, Caroline [Flack] has a fashion expert and I’ve got a film expert. There’s always someone to busk with. The most terrifying thing in live broadcasting is having to fill yourself live when you haven’t got anyone to talk to.

So you prefer presenting with another person?

Yes it’s always better to co-present than doing it on your own. Caroline doesn’t even count as a co-presenter. We just have a good chat, we hang out. You know, try doing it on your own with Simon Cowell staring at you.
Are you still in touch with Simon Cowell?

Oh God yeah. You get the occasional text and stuff. We have a very professional relationship, we don’t hang out. But I know I can always pick up the phone if I need to. He’d be my call in a hostage situation. There’s got to be six degrees of separation to the prison…

What’s been your biggest clanger during live broadcast?

I did Party In The Park with T4 and Elton John’s piano broke. I hadn’t been long in the game and I had to fill for 10 minutes. And at the end of it I literally just ran off the stage. I never want to see that back as long as I live.

How do you deal with nerves?

The 30 seconds before you go on are the most scary. As soon as you start the nerves dissipate. Holly Willoughby has this great thing where you hear the music [before going live] and you go, ‘I don’t want to be here – you do it!’ And then suddenly the screen goes back and you go, ‘Oh yeah, OK fine - I get it.’

Who’s been your favourite person to interview?

People like Paul McCartney and George Clooney are the ones that you look at and go, ‘Wow.’ The lovely thing is you only get star struck for a minute and then you get on with it. It’s about being personable and listening and having a quick wit – you don’t need to be a smart arse all the time. But then you don’t want to be too like, ‘Please be my friend…!’

You must get recognised on the street the whole time…

As long as you do a good job and you’re happy, it’s kind of nice being recognised, it’s brilliant. WhenThe X Factor’s on I have to leave an extra half hour when I leave the house because everyone wants to talk about who they like and who they don’t like. That’s odd. But you can’t really complain when people watch what you do.

You seem very relaxed. Does anything faze you?

Never say never, I’m sure I could die on my arse. You’re only as good as your last show.
